Our Mares

The stallions may get all the press, but experienced breeders for centuries have realized the mare is at least half the equation. Many credit them for even more, as it is the mare primarily that socializes the foals--unless of course you let your stallion run with his mares.

Our mares have been chosen carefully to compliment our rare Winks stallion, his sons, and our other stallions. We have studied the principles of linebreeding, and it is well accepted by many breeds that linebreeding can produce your most exceptional individuals. Not every line in Miniatures though can be used for this, as so many carry various dwarf genes. We have diligently researched to try to avoid ever incorporating dwarf genes into our herd. The Winkelmans' come from a Shetland & Welsh history, and their Miniatures trace back to Shetland blood in many cases. As the Shetland has been successfully linebred since 1880 in this country, we felt very safe trying it with the Winks Miniature. We have not been disappointed with the results! We are still building, and welcome leads on any related mares. There are only a handful of living Winks Miniatures. Primarily we've bought daughters of Winks horses, or daughters of the foundation animals Mr Winkelman used.

The lovely ladies of SilverWind:

 Our Newest Winks bred mare,

DBF's Fancy Face

Boy were we happy to recieve this phone call! Having visited Fancy's previous owner back in 2001 on my way to pick up Polly & Lady, I was able to see the elegant Winks Spirit. Spirit is 28 this year, and Fancy is her last foal, and last daughter. Many of Spirit's foals were sold as pets and therefore unregistered, so not much of her unique cross is left. Winks Spirit was sired by Iowa's Little Kernel, and out of one of Mr Winkelman's Showdeo mares, Winks Showdeo Inspiration. Fancy therefore brings 25% of this coveted blood to our program--and hopefully from her wild facial markings and bright blue eyes, some of it's loud color also! She is expecting her first foal by SilverWind Rev's Little Jangles in 2008.

Ollie's Polly Pearl

We are forever grateful to Sonny Lucas and Linda Kempf for letting us purchase Polly for our program. She is by Kernel, and out of his daughter Ollie's Molly/Molly Dee. Polly is 21 this year. She has given us one son also to date, SilverWind Rev's Little Kernel, and a daughter, SilverWind Redeemed, who foaled our first Polly granddaughter in 2006! She is in foal to Jangles for 2008 after having taken a few years off and we are very excited!

Trigger's Tillie VB

Tillie is another one of our 'gems'. She is an 20 yr old daughter of Mitzy's Trigger VB, and thereby a half sister to the great Choco's Little Specks Red Boy. Her dam line is Lou-Ed shetland going to the great Red Crescent King, a son of Billy Boy Crescent (see history pg for info on Billy Boy), multiple times. She has given us an exceptional son by Revelation, and is bred to Rev's son SilverWind Rev's Little Jangles for an 2008 foal.

Trigger's Debbie VB

This is another half sister of Choco's Little Specks Red Boy, and another treasured gem to us. She is also a genetic goldmine, being a line bred daughter of Trigger. We bought her at the same time as Tillie, and she is 11 yrs old. She is expecting a foal by SilverWind Rev's Little Jangles in 2008.

HCM/Lowrey's What A Luv

While we're on the subject of Choco's Little Specks Red Boy, this is one of his daughters we own. Luv is a beautiful deep silver dapple and is out of Rev's full sister, Winks Rhema. Her full siblings include JJ Lowrey's Red Boy and Lowrey's Princess Bobette. She had a nasty dystocia in 2000 of a very large colt (she is only 29.5" ) but after some time off came back and gave us a handsome little coal black colt by our HCM stallion in 2005 who will finish small like she is.

More mares are pictured on Mares 2 page...
